Westfield State 66, Worcester State 50
Westfield, MA – Sophomore Cassy Jouannet
(Conway,MA) posted game highs of 12 points and 11 rebounds and
senior guard Katie Sylvain (Hadley, MA) had 12
points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals to lead
Westfield State College to a 66-50 victory over Worcester State in
MASCAC action this evening.
The Owls boosted their record to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the
conference, while Worcester dropped to 5-9 and 1-1.
Scoring 11 points and grabbing six rebounds in Westfield’s
balanced attack was senior forward Andrea Wasuk
(Lenox, MA).
Worcester rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit to trim
Westfield’s lead to five points, but the Owls weathered the
comeback paced by the strong inside attack of Wasuk and
Jouannet.
Westfield led 51-46 with 6:13 remaining, then Wasuk dropped in four
buckets in the paint and Jouannet added two field goals as the Owls
took a 63-50 lead with 1:16 remaining.
In a number of key statistics, Westfield shot 16 for 21 from the
foul line and committed only 10 turnovers. The Owls also received
strong play from their reserves. Ten players scored for Westfield,
including 23 bench points.
The teams traded leads for most of the first half before Westfield
began taking control. The Owls led 29-21 at halftime and by as many
as 13 points before the Lancers mounted their mini-comeback, led by
the 3-point shooting of Kathleen Foley (Hudson,
NH). The sophomore reserve guard canned three 3-point baskets and
scored a team-high 11 points.
Alexis George (Worcester, MA) and Molly
Hein (Hudson, NH) each had 10 points and six boards for
the Lancers.
Worcester State will continue MASCAC play when they entertain Framingham State this Saturday at 3 PM.
