MCLA 72, Worcester State 59
North Adams, MA --- MCLA teamates Laura Silverman (Ballston Lake, NY) and Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, NY) each notched double-doubles to help lead the Trailblazers past Worcester State, 72-59, this evening in MASCAC women's basketball action.
The win for the Trailblazers (11-8, 2-5 MASCAC) marked their first since the 1996-97 season when they defeated the Lancers, 70-63, in the second game that season. The win streak, which was their longest active streak against an active opponent, spanned 25 games including two MASCAC Tournament contests in 1998 and 2001.
In the first half Silverman and Wehner were both in double
figures. Silverman started the
Trailblazer scoring with six straight points and would finish the
half with 10 of her 22 points. Wehner, who came off the bench to
start the contest, tallied 12 points while collecting collecting
six rebounds. Both teams battled back and forth in the half with a
gap no greater than six points at any time. WSC freshman
Brittany McGinness (Billerica, MA) was her teams
leader for the half with eight points. The Lancers took a one
point, 33-32, lead into the break.
Worcester State (5-14, 1-6 MASCAC) held a brief three point lead in
the second half, but Silverman rattled off an early six straight
points to give her team the lead for the rest of the game. The
Trailblazers built a lead as much as 14 points behind the scoring
of Wehner, Silverman, and Alie Dobrovolc (Little
Falls, NY).
With just over three minutes left, the Lancers would pull as close as three points (61-58), but thats when Dobrovolc dropped five quick points to bring the lead back to eight with under three minutes to play. From there Worcester was forced to foul and Wehner took over the final scoring for the Trailblazers going six for seven from the line sealing a much needed conference win.
Silverman went 10-for-13 from the field as she finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double this season with four steals while Whener added a game-high 24 points with 13 rebounds in the victory for her eighth contest in double digit figures. Dobrovolc also recorded 13 points for MCLA.
The Lancers were paced by senior Erin McCullough (Harvard, MA), junior Reilly O'Keefe (Warren, MA) and sophomore Alexis George (Worcester, MA) who each chipped in with 11 points apiece while freshman Kaleigh Charette (Fairhaven, MA) grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. George also ended the evening with seven boards.
Worcester State will host Westfield State this Tuesday at 6 PM.
