Owls Surge Ahead For 64-50 Victory

Worcester, MA --- Senior Lauren Sylvian (Hadley, MA) scored a game-high 14 points as she led four Westfield State teammates in double-figures as the Owls defeated Worcester State, 64-50, this evening at Lancer Gymnasium in MASCAC women’s basketball action.

Westfield State, winners of eight straight games, improve to 17-3 and 8-0 in the MASCAC while the Lancers dip to 5-15 overall and 1-7 in the conference.

Senior Andrea Wasuk (Lenox, MA) notched 13 points while sophomore Cassy Jouannet (Conway, MA) tallied 11 points with seven rebounds. Senior Katie Sylvian (Hadley, MA) had a great all-around game as she finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

The Lancers were paced by junior Reilly O’Keefe’s (Warren, MA) 11 points while sophomore Alexis George (Worcester, MA) and freshman Kaleigh Charette (Fairhaven, MA) scored 10 points apiece. First-year Stasia Twomey (Groton, MA) also added eight points with four rebounds off the bench for WSC.

With Worcester State leading 27-17 with four minutes left to play in the opening period, the Owls went on a 13-2 spurt to close out the half and take a 30-29 heading into the break.
Coming out of the locker room the game went back and forth for the first ten minutes of the second half.

With seven lead changes and three ties, the Owls finally took a 44-43 lead at the 9:56 mark on a Katie Sylvian three-pointer to put Westfield State up for good. The visitors would then go on a 20-7 run to close out the half to cruise and remain in first place in the conference standings.

Westfield State out rebounded the Lancers 34-30 while they also scored 25 points off of 24 turnovers. After allowing WSC to shoot 44% from the floor (11-for-25) in the first half and 5-for-6 from beyond the arc, the Owls shut Worcester State down in the final stanza holding them to 33% from the field (8-for-24) and 0-for-7 from three point land.

Both teams will play MASCAC opponents on Saturday. Worcester State will head to Framingham for a 3:30 tip-off while the Owls will host Salem State at 1 PM.
