Women's Basketball Ends Skid with Win over Framingham State

Framingham, MA --- Junior Brianne Flanders (Southampton, MA) notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to help lead Worcester State to a 61-50 win this afternoon over Framingham State in MASCAC women’s basketball action.

The Lancers snapped a seven game skid to improve their record to 6-15 and 2-7 in the MASCAC while the Rams drop to 8-13 and 2-7 in the conference

Sophomore Alexis George (Worcester, MA) and senior Erin McCullough (Harvard, MA) recorded 11 points apiece for WSC while McCullough went 7-for-10 from the free throw line. Junior Reilly O’Keefe (Warren, MA) and freshman Brittney McGinness (Billerica, MA) each chipped in with nine points for the Lancers.

Third-year Tonya Chester (Leominster, MA) paced the Rams with 10 points in the second period to finish with a game-high 14 points while sophomore Jill Johnson (Mansfield, MA) tallied seven points with four steals. Chester also grabbed eight caroms for FSC.

The Lancers opened the games first seven minutes with a commanding 16-0 lead before settling with a 31-20 score at the half.

With on the clock 15:50 in the second stanza, Worcester State led 35-23 before the Rams made it a seven point game three minutes later (35-28), but that was as close as they would get. WSC extended the lead to 54-32 with 5:14 left and maintained a double-figure advantage to cruise for the victory.

Worcester State shot 42% from the floor in for the game while they held FSC to 29% shooting from the field in the second half and just 3-for-17 from beyond the arc in the contest. The Lancers dominated the Rams on the boards (45-45), in the paint (28-22) and with second chance opportunities (14-6).

There were also 46 fouls between the two teams while Worcester State shot 58% from the charity stripe for the contest (19-for-43).

WSC will play their next three games at home starting with Fitchburg State on Tuesday at 6 PM and continuing with Bridgewater State on Saturday at 4 o’clock on “Pink Zone” day. The Rams continue their MASCAC schedule with a road contest at Salem State at 6 PM
