Trinity 76, Worcester State 58
Hartford, CT --- Despite a career-high 20 points from sophomore
Kaleigh Charette (Fairhaven, MA), Worcester State
dropped a 76-58 decision to Trinity on Tuesday evening in
non-conference women’s basketball action. Charette scored
most of her points as she was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free
throw line.
Senior Bri Flanders (Southampton, MA) also tallied
a career-best 17 points to help pace the Lancers (4-4) as she
connected for 8-for-9 from the field while classmate Reilly
O’Keefe (Warren, MA) and freshman Kara
Rogers (Lowell, MA) each contributed eight points apiece.
Rogers handed out four assists, Charrette swiped four balls and
sophomore Molly Hein (Hudson, NH) blocked three of
WSC’s four shots.
Trinity (5-2) was paced by Michelle Royals’s (Torrington, CT)
19 points while Kaitlin Ciarleglio (Waterbury, CT) finished with 11
points, four assists and three steals. Tess Donie (Worcester, MA)
and Claire Arnstien (Hicksville, NY) also chipped in with nine
points as Rebecca Cohn (San Francisco, CA) corralled a game-best
seven rebounds.
The Bantams opened with a 10-5 spurt for the games first five
minutes and they extended the lead to 24-10 at 11:39. Worcester
State would go on an 11-4 run to trail by seven (28-21) with 6:45
left. With Trinity ahead 32-25 at the 5:11 mark, the Bantams would
outscore the Lancers by a 16-7 margin to take a 48-32 edge at
halftime.
Worcester State opened the second stanza with a 10-4 stretch four
minutes into the period to trail by eight (50-42), but that was as
close as they would get. The deficit was still nine points (56-47)
after an O’Keefe trey at 12:54, but Trinity would soon get
into double digits after they outscored WSC 13-5 over the next
eight minutes to take a 69-52 edge.
WSC would never threaten again and the Bantams would maintain the
cushion for the rest of the contest.
The Bantams held slim margins in rebounding (37-34), on the
offensive glass (14-10) and points off turnovers (13-10) while the
Lancers held the advantage in second chance
Worcester State held Trinity to shoot 41 percent for the game, but
the Bantams made eight of their 19 attempts from downtown. WSC was
held to 31 percent inside the arc in the first stanza (6-for-19)
and stayed in the game due in large part to going 14-for-16 from
the charity stripe.
The Lancers improved to shoot 43 percent from the field and were
only outscored 30-26 in the second period.
Both teams will play non-conference opponents on the road on
Thursday at 7 PM. Worcester State travels to Wesleyan (CT) while
Trinity heads to Rivier.
