Women's Basketball Advances To Worcester City Championship

Dudley, MA --- The Worcester State University women's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the 30th Worcester City Tournament with a 57-33 victory over Becker on the campus of Nichols College Friday evening.

The Blue and Gold look to defend their title against WPI in the championship tilt Saturday at 3:30 PM. Tomorrow's contest marks the first time that the two squads will have played in the City Tournament championship final.
 
The Lancers (2-0) got off to a quick 11-0 lead and from there they would not look back. They ended the half with a 21-4 run and took a 34-9 lead into the half. The difference was shooting. The Lancers fired 46.7% from the field, while the Hawks only shot 12.1%.

The star of the half was Lancer sophomore Meaghan O'Keefe (Warren, MA) with 10 points and six rebounds. She finished the night with 12 points and six rebounds.
 
Worcester State's solid play continued in the second half. For the game the Lancers shot 39.3%, and had a very balanced attack with 11 different players scoring. The Lancers were strong on the boards as well. As a team they out-rebounded the Hawks 52-40 and had 12 different players pull in at least one rebound.

Worcester State's one shortcoming on the night was at the free-throw line where the Lancers made just 8-of-21 free throws in the game (38 percent).
 
Leading the way for the Hawks (0-1) was freshman Nia Nguany (Standish, ME) with 13 points and seven rebounds on the night.
 
The Hawks will play the host Bison in the consolation game at 1:30 PM.
