Women's Basketball Rebounds With Win Over UMass Dartmouth

North Dartmouth, MA --- Senior Alexis George (Worcester, MA) recorded a season-best 21 points off of a 8-for-16 performance from the field as she helped lead Worcester State to a 79-56 victory this evening in non conference women's basketball action at UMass Dartmouth's Tripp Athletic Center.

The Lancers (3-1) were also paced by junior Kaleigh Charette (Fairhaven, MA) chipped in 15 points and sophomore Meaghan O'Keefe (Warren, MA) added 15 with eight rebounds. Sophomore also Gina Sicuso (Stoneham, MA) had eight points and nine boards off the bench.

Two Corsairs (1-3) reached double digit points during the contest as freshman Erika Bornemann (Canton, MA) scored a team-high 17 points with eight rebounds while sophomore forward Colleen Moriarty (Canton, MA) registered a double-double with 12 points and a contest-best 11 rebounds. Junior guard Jessica Underwood (Dorchester, MA) chipped in with eight points for UMass Dartmouth.

The Blue and Gold outrebounded the Corsairs 47-39 as WSU also shot 47.5 percent from the field for the contest and held a 36-24 edge in points in the paint.

Both teams battled back and forth, exchanging buckets to open the first half of play. With 13:11 left in the first half, the score was tied 12-12, but during the next eight minutes the Lancers went on a 16-4 run, pushing the score to 28-16 with 5:13 left in the first half capped off by back-to-back trey's by senior Kathleen Foley (Hudson, NH).

The Corsairs fought back with six points from Underwood in the final four minutes to make the score 33-25, with the Lancers holding onto the edge going into halftime.

UMass Dartmouth opened the second half with quick three pointers from Bornemann and junior guard Stephanie Houtman (New Bedford, MA) as they pulled to within seven points with 14:49 left to play.

But a 12-5 run by Worcester State put the Corsairs into a double-digit hole, which the Lancers maintained throughout the remainder of the second half. WSU would finish the game outscoring UMass Dartmouth 26-13 to secure the win.

Foley is now alone in second place with 124 career three pointers. She is now only 60 off the mark held by Lindsey DellChiaie.

UMD will return to action when they host Bridgewater State next Tuesday evening. Worcester State will visit Babson next Monday.
