Eight Garner MASCAC Winter All-Academc Team Accolades

Westfield, MA --- The three seniors Emily Barrett (Dracut, MA), Meaghan Burns (W. Brookfield, MA) and Michel'le St. Pierre (Seekonk, MA) highlighted eight honorees who were recognized on the MASCAC Winter All-Academic team as announced by league publicist Emily Diekelmann.

Other selections included sophomores Julie Frankian (Millbury, MA), Natasha Gonzalez (Milford, MA) and Cheyenne Jennings (Worcester, MA/Wachusett) as freshmen Ashley Espinosa (Putnam, CT) and Olivia Gardiner (Waltham, MA) were also lauded for their outstanding efforts in the classroom.

The Blue and Gold had the third-most student-athletes among women's basketball teams in the league while the overall team grade point average for the fall 2013 semester was a sensational 3.32 - the fourth-highest cumulative GPA in the athletics department.

To earn a spot on the MASCAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have achieved a 3.20 cumulative or semester-based GPA during their season of competition.

Under the direction of head coach Karen Tessmer, the Blue and Gold qualified for their 25th consecutive MASCAC Tournament and 20th with guidance from Tessmer. WSU also topped the conference with the fewest points allowed per game and were among the top 20 in New England with a 70.2 percent free throw percentage, which is the second highest clip in program history.

Among institutions in the MASCAC, Worcester State had 64 overall selections on the league winter academic honor roll for the third highest sum in the league. The total number of student-athletes also marked the highest since the conference began listing its all-academic honor roll on a season-by-season basis during the 2009-10 academic year.
