Lancers Ride Big First Half to First MASCAC Victory

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Worcester State finished the first quarter on a 12-0 run and held Fitchburg State to just 16 points in the first half as they rolled to a 78-43 victory in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at Brissette Court.

The Lancers get their first MASCAC victory of the year, improving to 1-1 in the conference and 6-7 overall. Fitchburg State falls to 1-11 (0-1 MASCAC).

Abby St. Martin (Putnam, Conn.) led the way with 15 points, six rebounds, two blocks and a steal for the Lancers, who had a 58-40 edge on the glass and forced 27 Falcons turnovers.

Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, Mass.) was effective off the bench, scoring 11 points, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out three assists. Gigi LeMay (Grafton, Mass.) and Erin Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored in double-figures as well and dished out four assists apiece. LeMay poured in 12 points on 6-10 shooting, along with eight rebounds and three steals. Gallella had 10 points, grabbed six boards and had a pair of thefts.

Gina Parmenter (Oxford, Mass.), who led Fitchburg with 8 points and four steals, gave the visitors a 9-8 lead with 6:25 to play in the first quarter. From there, Worcester held the Falcons scoreless for more than seven and a half minutes.

In that time, the Lancers took the lead on a layup by LeMay, and then extended it to a 20-9 advantage by the end of the first quarter.

Madison Gutierrez (Holyoke, Mass.) drilled a three-pointer to start the second quarter and the Lancers extended their lead to 21 points, completing a 22-0 run before Morgan Genness (Belgrade, Maine) hit a three-pointer to end the Falcons drought.

Worcester led 40-16 at the break and continued to build on their lead through the second half, taking their largest lead of 36 points with just over 1:30 to play.

Genness had 7 points for Fitchburg, while Pena Niles (Billerica, Mass.) and Olivia Almeida (Wilmington, Mass.) scored six points each. Lovashia Rosario (Worcester, Mass.) had a team-high 8 rebounds, along with three assists and two steals.

Shelby Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) scored six points, including a perfect 4-4 at the foul line, where the Lancers went 16-21 (76.2%).

Fitchburg is set to play at Bridgewater State on Saturday at 1:00 PM, while the Lancers will host MCLA at the same time as part of another MASCAC doubleheader at Brissette Court.
