Lancers Drop Defensive Battle to Keene St. Owls

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Women's Basketball team returned to New England for another away match after their brief sojourn in Northern Virginia at the Pablo Coto tournament hosted by Marymount this past weekend. The Lancers came into Keene looking to grab their second win of the season against the 2-2 Keene State Owls.

The first two quarters of the game would see each team battling for shares of the lead as they traded baskets back and forth, but a strong defense presence on both ends of the court would limit the offensive attack for both sides. The Lancers starting five would show great determination and accuracy, but the Owls defense would hinder some of the advantages of fresh legs coming off the bench as they worked to put Worcester State in tough shots that were just not dropping for Worcester. The strong defense on both sides would keep the game within a few points and a 26-27 halftime score would send both teams to their locker room at halftime aimed to win the night.

A crucial third quarter would set the pace for the remainder of the game. The teams started testing their range behind the three-point line in a plan to extend leads and runs on the night in which Keene jumped ahead and would end the quarter with a six-point lead in the final quarter. The fourth quarter had the Lancers tight on the Owls heels, but tactical fouls allowed Keene to get their chance at the free throw line where they hit key baskets that would push their lead to 10 and solidify the 48-58 victory.

Sophomore Cam Watkins (Dracut, MA) and junior Abby St. Martin (Putnam, CT) led the Lancers with 12 points with Watkins adding eight rebounds to her total with St. Martin tacking on six of her own.

The Lancers will have a week off before returning to action next Tuesday when they journey to New England College for a 7pm start.
