Lancers Sweep Inaugural Weekend with Shutout, Come From Behind Wins

COLMAR, Pa. -- The first two games in program history for Worcester State women's ice hockey took two different paths, but both of them ended in victory for the Lancers, as they beat Arcadia twice to open both team's seasons.

In the first game in program history, the Worcester State University women's ice hockey team earned their first even win and shutout with a 5-0 victory on Saturday evening at Hatfield Ice Arena.

Sunday afternoon, Worcester State came from two goals down with a pair of goals in the final four minutes of regulation to force overtime. In the extra period, Clare Conway (Billerica, Mass.) scored with 1:41 gone to deliver a sudden death victory for the Lancers (2-0).

Game 1: Worcester State 5, Arcadia 0 (Saturday)

Cassidhe Wozniak (Turners Falls, Mass.) scored a hat-trick, including the first ever goal in program history as the Lancers scored twice in the first period and once more in the middle frame to take a 3-0 lead to the final 20 minutes.

Amy MacGlashing (Marlborough, Mass.) and Shelby Reaugh (Raleigh, N.C.) also tallied in their Worcester State debuts.

With the puck drop, history was made as Arcadia head coach Kelsey Koelzer became the first African American woman to coach an NCAA women's hockey team in the history of the sport.

Game 2: Worcester State 3, Arcadia 2 (OT) (Sunday)

Conway, who had two assists in Saturday's opener, scored her first goal of the season to cap a frantic comeback.

At risk of suffering their first defeat, the Lancers cut the deficit in half when MacGlashing scored her second goal of the season with 3:51 remaining in the third. Less than a minute and a half later, Anya Laxton (Holbrook, N.Y.) tied the game at 2.

The Lancers had five more shots in the minute and a half to try to tie the game, but the four on net were turend aside by Arcadia goalie Sophia Szelag.

Szelag made 40 saves, while Worcester State junior Amber Lee (Nashua, N.H.) made 31 stops to earn her second straight victory.

The Lancers will return home for their first ever home game, which will occur next Friday night when they host Suffolk. Puck drop is set for 6:10 PM at Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center.
