Women’s Ice Hockey has Unbeaten Streak Snapped by Cardinals

WORCESTER, Mass. – A seven-game unbeaten streak came to an end on Thursday evening as the Worcester State women's ice hockey team was defeated 4-1 by Saint Mary's University (MN) at Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center in the first Lancers contest of 2022.

Cassidhe Wozniak (Turners Falls, Mass.) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season on a breakaway to tie the game at one, but the Cardinals (8-5) scored three times in under three minutes to take control of the game.

All five goals came in the second period, with the visitors taking the lead 3:05 into the frame on a goal by Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.), the second of her freshman season.

Wozniak tied the game at the 13:10 mark, converting one of several breakaway opportunities the Lancers had in the second period. Cardinals senior goalie Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) stood tall, making tne of her 19 saves in the middle frame.

The Cardinals snatched the lead back with two goals inside of a minute and another, both set up by Ellie Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.). They capitalized on the power play for the first time later in the period when Delaney Wolf (Bismarck, N.D.) made it 4-1 with her first goal of the year.

Saint Mary's outshot Worcester 45-19, and Lancer junior Amber Lee (Nashua, N.H.) made 41 saves, but suffered the defeat, just her third of the year.

After their two-game swing in New England, the Cardinals return to the Midwest to play at College of St. Scholastica in Duluth on January 14th.

The Lancers (7-3-2) have added a game on Monday, January 10th at Utica, and will face-off with the Pioneers at 3:00 PM.
