Lancers Pushed by Streaking Pioneers

UTICA, N.Y. – Worcester State University faced a red-hot Utica College team on Monday afternoon and suffered a 6-1 setback to the Pioneers in a non-conference women's ice hockey matchup at Adirondack Bank Center.

Emily Pavoni (Granby, Mass.) scored her third goal of the year and Ellen Cook (Becket, Mass.) notched her first point as a Lancer with an assist.

Cook, who just transferred to Worcester State from Utica, made her Lancer debut in the very rink she called home just weeks ago.

Kiersten Erickson (Broomfield, Colo.) also picked up a helper, her fourth point of the year, on Worcester State's goal, the only score of the second period, which pulled the Lancers to within a goal.

After a pair of power play goals in the first period to take the lead, Utica scored again on the power play in the opening minutes of the third period to re-grab a two-goal edge. They would go on to score four times in the period, capping a victory where six different players found the back of the net against Amber Lee (Nashua, N.H.), who made 39 saves in net for Worcester.

The Lancers were outshot 45-26 and went 0-2 on the power play, while Utica scored on three of five opportunities with an extra skater.

The Pioneers (11-2) came into the contest on a four-game winning streak. They have now outscored their opponents 23-5 over the past five games.

Worcester State (7-4-2) is scheduled to play at Southern Maine tomorrow, with puck drop set for 4:00 PM.
