Lancers Answer Early Test, Run Away from AMCATS

WORCESTER, MA -- Worcester State took just a minute and a half to answer an early Anna Maria goal, and then shut out the AMCATS for the final 57 minutes as the Lancers earned a 5-1 win in a matchup of cross-county rival on Saturday evening in Eastern Collegiate Hockey Alliance (ECHA) action at the Worcester Ice Center.

The Lancers remain perfect in ECHA play at 4-0, and improve to 11-6-2 on the season, while Anna Maria falls to 7-9-2 (3-2-1 ECHA).

Senior forward Clare Conway (Billerica, Mass.) scored twice, including the game tying goal at 3:47 of the first period after Grace Dodge (St. Paul, Minn.) had given the AMCATS a 1-0 lead two minutes in.

Ellen Cook (Becket, Mass.) had a goal and an assist and Katie Puumala (Framingham, Mass.) had three helpers for Worcester State, who outshot Anna Maria 39-7.

Amber Lee (Nashua, N.H.) stopped six of those seven shots for the win, while Anna Maria junior goalie Julia Smith (Chillwack, B.C.) finished with 26 saves on the night.

Amy MacGlashing (Marlborough, Mass.) scored the eventual game-winner midway through the first period, giving the Lancers a 2-1 lead at the break. Cook (Becket, Mass.) scored the only goal of the second period, her second of the season with the Lancers.

Conway, who has now scored in eight straight games, would add a power play goal early in the third period, and Emily Pavoni (Granby, Mass.) gave the Lancers extra insurance with four minutes left to play.
