Worcester State Drop First of the Dual Match Weekend to Salve

Worcester, MA- The Lancers women's ice hockey team hosted Salve Regina tonight in their home opener in a non-conference matchup that saw the Seahawks of Salve soar past Worcester State. This was the first half of a home-and-home weekend series as the Lancers will look to get revenge on the Seahawks when they travel down to Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon for a rematch.

Tonight, the Lancers were simply outplayed, dropping the dual by a final of 4-1. However, the story of the game is well summarized by each teams' shot totals. The Lancers put 19 pucks on net. The Seahawks more than doubled that with 45.

Worcester State's lone goal came at 12:54 of first period on a highlight reel play in which junior Amy MacGlashing (Marlborough, Mass.) passed the puck through the neutral zone to find senior Shelby Reaugh (Raleigh, N.C.). With just the goalie to beat, Reaugh made a quick deke to get her to bite then guided the puck into the net.

From then on it was all Seahawks, with the visitors tying up the game before the end of the first period, and then tacking on three third period goals including an empty netter with less than a minute to go to cement their victory.

There were plenty of missed opportunities, as the Lancers were unable to capitalize on any of the four power play opportunities they were given. Senior Amber Lee (Fairlawn, N.J) played well in goal, but the sheer volume of attacks was simply too much to overcome for the Lancers.

Worcester State falls to a .500 record of 2-2, while Salve picked up their first win of the season, making their record 1-2. The two teams will square off again Sunday afternoon at 3pm in Rhode Island to cap off their weekend series.
