Lancers Bring Western New England to Draw

Worcester, MA- On Saturday evening, the Worcester State Women's Hockey team was back in action to take on Western New England University (WNE) on the road in a second night of a home-and-home matchup. The Lancers tied the Golden Bears by a score of 1-1.

Heading into a road contest, Worcester State was determined to get off to a strong start.  In the first five minutes, both teams blocked each other's shot attempts to keep the game scoreless.Sophomore Kelsey Czerniawski (Chicopee, Mass.) provided the Lancers a chance to take the lead during the first period with five saves. Even though Worcester State held a 13-5 shot advantage, no goals could be scored heading into the first intermission.

Both teams tried to break the scoreless tie as the second period began. Worcester State had a few productive scoring chances within the first five minutes of the second period, but could not place the puck into the net. Czerniawski made an excellent diving save to keep the game scoreless with twelve minutes remaining in the period. Following the great save, the Lancers successfully killed off the first WNE power play of the game. With just under a minute remaining in the period, WNE was able to take a 1-0 lead off the stick of Maddie Pope to head into the second intermission with the lead.

When the third period began, Worcester State came out of the locker room determined to tie the game. Thirty-three seconds into the third period, Worcester State went on their first power play of the game. Even though the Lancers could get some shots on goal, they could not capitalize on the player advantage. Fortunately for the Lancers, their penalty kill was able to kill off a WNE power play to keep the score within one goal. With twenty seconds remaining, Worcester State had a player advantage hoping to tie the game. Just before the horn sounded, senior Emily Pavoni (Granby, Mass.) was able to tie the score up at 1-1 with two seconds remaining to send the game into overtime!
