Lancers Women's Ice Hockey Race Past Greyhounds

Worcester, MA- Looking to remain unbeaten in conference play, the Worcester State University Women's Ice Hockey team took on their cross-town rival this afternoon as the Assumption Greyhounds visited the Lancers.

An action-packed first period started with a bang, when senior Katie Puumala (Framingham, Mass.) snuck the puck past the Greyhound goalie just 52 seconds into the action. Assumption would take advantage on the power play six minutes later, evening the score at one a piece. The Lancers would not head into the intermission without a late-period momentum shift, as senior Clare Conway (Billerica, Mass.) put WSU back on top with less than a minute to go.

Through the majority of the second frame there was no scoring, though not for a lack of opportunity. The Lancers finally broke through to pad their lead 14 minutes and 34 seconds into the period, when they took advantage of a two-on-one attacking zone rush. Senior Cassidy's Wozniak (Turners Falls, Mass.) slid the puck cross-ice perfectly onto the stick of freshman Jennarae Bateman (Forest Lake, Minn.), who easily wristed a shot past the glove of the Greyhound goalie. A mere 24 seconds later WSU would score again to go up 4-1, this time the junior Amy MacGlashing (Marlborough, Mass.) beating the goalie short side and high as she drove towards the net from the left face off circle.

The third period got underway with the Lancers up by three, and they spent little time gaining some more distance on the Greyhounds. 3 minutes and 20 seconds into the third, senior Gabby Petrisin (High Bridge, NJ) found the back of the net to put Worcester State up 5-1. Sophomore Kiersten Erickson (Broomfield, Colo.) got in on the fun with eight minutes left, scoring while short handed to make the score 6-1.

That would be the score when the final horn sounded, as senior goalie Amber Lee (Fairlawn, NJ) was able to keep the Greyhounds to just the lone power play goal.

The Lancers and Greyhounds will clash once again tomorrow afternoon at a yet to be 6pm. Worcester State will head into tomorrow's battle now 11-6-1 (2-0 in conference).
