Women's Ice Hockey Takes First Game versus Wilkes

Worcester, MA- On Friday evening, the Worcester State Women's Hockey team was back in action to take on Wilkes University in a PA road trip. The Lancers defeated the Colonels by a score of 2-0.

 

Heading into the game, Worcester State tried to get off to a great start in Philadelphia. Early on in the contest, the Lancers went on a power play, but Wilkes was able to defend the power play successfully. With over half way through the first period, Wilkes went on a power play, but could not convert. At the 17:44 mark, senior Shelby Reaugh (Raleigh, N.C.) was able to place the Lancers in front 1-0 with an assist by senior Cassidhe Wozniak (Turners Falls, Mass.) and graduate student Kylian Kelly (Shrewsbury, Mass.). 48 seconds later Wozniak was able to record her second assist of the game by setting up graduate student Clare Conway (Billerica, Mass.) to place Worcester State up 2-0 heading into the first intermission.

 

As the second period began, Worcester State tried to expand on their two gal lead. Wilkes had a chance to cut the two gal deficient down to one, but were denied by senior Amber Lee (Fairlawn, NJ.). Even though Worcester State was able to go on two power plays in the period, they were not able to extend their lead to three heading into the second intermission.

 

When the third period began, Worcester State came out trying to protect their two goal lead. 50 minutes into the game, the Worcester State defense kept Wilkes at bay by maintaining their solid lead. Amber Lee was able to stop 21 shots tonight to help the Lancers secure a 2-0 victory on the first night of a back to back matchup between the two teams. This was Amber Lee's first shut out of the season.

Worcester State (12-6-1, 3-0) and Wilkes (4-13-2, 4-10-2) will be back on the ice February 4 when they go against each other again with puck drop at 3:30.
