Lancers Down Colonels in Shut Out Win

Lancers Down Colonels in Shut Out Win

Worcester, MA- A rescheduled showdown between the Worcester State Women's Ice Hockey team and the Curry College Colonels saw the women in action in a Monday afternoon tilt, looking for their first win of the season. The Lancers claimed both wins last season over Curry to go along with their first two in their opening season. Worcester came into the match looking to extend the win streak over the Colonels to five straight games.

Final:

Worcester: 4

Curry: 0

The Lancers dominated the majority of the first period as they found the back of the net twice in the first period. Sophomore Caroline Gates (Natick, MA) found the back of the net to open up the scoring as she was assisted by fellow sophomore Lea Gaspar (Chelmsford, MA) and first year Caroline Melanson (Wakefield, MA). First year Kelly Lovett (Peabody,MA) would score the Lancers second goal of the period as she was assisted by graduate student Katie Puumala (Framingham, MA) and first year Olivia Fehl (Sergeant Bluff, IA). Sophomore Kelsey Czerniawski (Chicopee,MA) stopped all 10 shots she faced in the period.

The second period was a defensive affair as both teams played strong defense working to neutralize any scoring opportunity on the day. Neither team found the back of the net, but there were plenty of chances as Worcester State had a pair of power plays and a 5 on 3, however they could not find the back of the net after a flurry of shots on the Colonels keeper sophomore Sarah Kerr. Gaspar was an anchor on the Worcester State defense as she blocked three shots in the second period.

The third period started just like the second as the defense held strong for both teams as Worcester State stopped another Curry power play that threatened to end their scoreless drought. First year Lana Pacific (Marlborough,Ma) stepped in the net for the final 12 minutes of the 3rd and came up big, making numerous diving and lunging saves to preserve the shutout. Senior Cassidy Wozniak (Turner Falls, MA) scored the Lancers third goal assisted by first year Fiona Hatton (Homer, AK) and senior Sydney Vautor (South Hamilton, MA). Grace Laubenstein scored an empty netter with about 3:30 to play to seal the deal for Worcester, she was assisted by sophomore Caroline Gates (Natick, MA) in a perfect faceoff pass back that left Laubenstein in line for the perfect send to the net.

The Lancers now move to (1-2, 0-1-0) as Curry now sits at (2-2, 0-0-0) on the day. Worcester is back in action on Friday night, November 10th, as they host Castleton at 6:10pm.
