Lancers Fall 4-3 to the Pilgrims

Worcester MA- After a heartbreaking loss in their previous game, Worcester State traveled to New England College for one more non-conference matchup before the winter break.

The Lancers started off hot with a goal from senior Sydney Vautour (Hamilton, Mass) just 6 minutes into the game, assisted by seniors Cassidhe Wozniak (Turner Falls, Mass) and Amy MacGlashing (Marlborough,Mass). Three minutes later, MacGlashing would add her name to the scoresheet with an unassisted goal to give Worcester State a 2 goal lead within the first 10 minutes. Less than a minute after the second goal, Wozniak would extend the lead to 3 goals with the assist coming from sophomore Jennarae Bateman (Wyoming,MN). Down 3-0 in the first period of play, the hosts would grab a goal 5 minutes before intermission, with the goal being scored by sophomore Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford,CT), assisted by fellow sophomore Olivia Lindberg (Stockholm,Sweden) and freshman Alexis Hornsby (Atkinson, NH). Worcester State would take the 3-1 lead into the first intermission.

 

After lots of exciting action in the second period, New England College cut the lead to 3-2 with a goal from graduate student Cassie Kelly (Alexandria, MN) with the assists from sophomore Gabrielle Iwinski (Batavia, IL) and Hornsby. Approximately 2 minutes after this, the hosts would equalize and go into the 2nd intermission with the game tied at 3, thanks to the second goal of the game by Kelly, with another assist from Iwinski and freshman Samantha Babbitt (Woodstock, VT).

 

The third period of play was an intense battle between the two teams and both created multiple scoring opportunities, but Hornsby was the star of the day as she scored the eventual game-winning goal, with just under 9 minutes to go in the third period. The goal was assisted by Gilchrist and freshman Sofia Gualtieri (Montreal,Quebec). The Lancers pushed to tie the game again but the efforts were unsuccessful.

 

Freshman Lana Pacific (Marlborough,Mass) made 23 saves on 27 shot attempts for the Lancers, while sophomore Amy Donnely (Taunton,Mass) made 20 saves on 23 shot attempts for the hosts. 

 

The Lancers fall to (5-7-1,4-1-1) and will play their next game on January 6th,2024, at Western New England, with the puck drop set for 7pm.
