LANCERS FALL TO PILGRIMS 2-0

 

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Lancers (6-11-1, 4-1-1 ECHA) faced off against the New England College Pilgrims (5-16, 1-14 GNAC) in a Tuesday afternoon showdown at the Worcester Ice Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED?

 

The first period saw no goal action with both teams heading into the intermission with a scoreless tie. The Lancers had nineteen shots compared to the Pilgrims fifteen shots. There was a heavy back-and-forth battle between the two.

 

With roughly eight minutes into the second period, The Pilgrims got on the board as Becca Pouliot scored her first goal of the season to break the scoreless tie as she snuck one past Lancers sophomore goalie Kelsey Czerniawski (Chicopee, Mass.). Alexis Hornsby was credited with the assist, her tenth of the year.   

 

First-year forward Rebekah Garbarino (Holly Springs, NC) found herself in the penalty box for tripping five minutes into the period. Worcester successfully killed off New England's powerplay keeping the score 1-0.

 

Worcester was able to fire off sixteen shots in the period, but none were able to find their way past Pilgrim graduate student netminder Sean D'urso (Andover, Mass). 

 

During the third period, the Lancers were called for three penalties. Three minutes into the period, senior defender Layna Pereiro (Chicago, Ill.) was sent to the box for tripping. The Pilgrims would strike again on the woman advantage, this time off the stick of graduate student forward Cassie Kelly (Alexandria, Minn.) for her fifth goal of the season with 15:45 remaining. Hornsby picked up her second assist of the afternoon, totaling eleven on the year now.

 

Three minutes later, Pereiro was sent off to the penalty box again for cross-checking. The Lancers killed off the penalty before they were whistled again as sophomore forward Jennarae Bateman (Wymoing, Minn.) was called for tripping twelve minutes into the final period successfully killing that off as well.

 

With the loss, the Lancers drop to (6-12-1, 4-1-1 ECHA), while New England College improves to (6-16, 1-14 GNAC).

 

WHAT'S NEXT?: 

 

The next game for the Lancers will be a conference matchup against Rivier University  (7-8-3, 2-2-2 ECHA) on February 2nd at home for a scheduled start time of 7:10 PM. This contest also marks the team's Lancer game.
