Women's Soccer Drops 3-2 Decision In Overtime To Rhode Island College

Providence, RI --- Rhode Island College freshman Jaclyn Greenman (Waterford, CT) connected for the match-clinching goal 1:33 into overtime to help lead the Anchorwomen to a 3-2 extra session triumph over Worcester State in non-conference women's soccer action this evening.

With the win RIC evens out its record to 1-1 while the Lancers slip to 1-2 with the setback.

After a scoreless opening frame that saw the Blue and Gold hold the commanding 13-5 lead in shots, the Anchorwomen drew first blood on a shot that sophomore Chelsey Cobs (Ashford, CT) chipped in off a ricocheted attempt by junior Lauren Maisano (Bristol, RI) just 30 seconds into the second period.

Worcester State answered back in the 64th minute when senior Gaby Gonet (Agawam, MA) potted her first marker of the campaign on a rocket from 30-yards away that was dished out by junior Shelby Archer (Dayville, CT).

The Lancers struck again nearly 10 minutes later and made the score 2-1 off a corner kick from the right side by sophomore Alicia Macomber (Stoughton, MA) that slipped past the defense for a goal.

But the hosts got themselves back in the game in the 77th minute – almost 2½ minutes after Macomber tallied – when RIC junior Danielle Peloquin (Pawtucket, RI) finished a loose ball in front of the net that sophomore net minder Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, MA) could not corral.

That set the stage for Greenman who netted her first collegiate marker for the game-winner. She fired a shot on the left side of the box to end the contest.

Worcester State did finish with the 25-20 lead in shots (12-11 shots on goal), but Rhode Island College held the 14-12 edge in the second period alone and the 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Witkowski finished with eight saves for the Lancers while junior Audry Maia (Norton, MA) scooped up 10 saves for the Anchorwomen.

Sophomore Gabrielle Turner (Smithfield, RI) dished out the tying and game-winning assists for the hosts to finish with two points for RIC.

Worcester State will play crosstown rival WPI at 4 PM on Wednesday while the Anchorwomen host Salve Regina at 4 o'clock on Tuesday.
