Salve Regina Tops Worcester State Women’s Soccer, 1-0

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina University Seahawks were able to uphold the Worcester State University Lancers Thursday afternoon at Reynolds Field, as Salve Regina's freshman forward Abby McMackin (Wapole, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal in the 24th minute, eventually resulting in the game-winner.

The Worcester State Lancers outshot the Seahawks 14-13, but were unable to get a goal past Salve Regina's goalkeeper, freshman Carly Pala (Milford, Conn.). Pala recorded a shutout, and tallied up a total of 10 saves in the full 90 minutes of play.

In the battle between the teams, Worcester State's two-time Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference player of the week goalkeeper, senior Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, Mass.), recorded her second loss of the season (4-2-1), as that was her first goal against in the past five games played. Witkowski made seven saves on the night.

Offensively for the Lancers, senior Kiley Hardy (Pepperrell, Mass.), freshman Tsara LeBlanc (Gardner, Mass.), and freshman Jenna Martin (Salem, N.H.) each marked three shots on the night. 10-14 (.714) of Worcester State's shots were on goal, in comparison to Salve Regina's 8-13 (.615) shot on goal percentage.

For the Seahawks, McMackin scored one goal off of two shots, while sophomore Francesca Galezzi (Lynn, Mass.) marked the team-high three shots. Junior Raine Oesterle (Monroe, Conn.) and freshman Delaney Maxell (Lincoln, R.I.) also took two shots apiece at Worcester State's keeper, Witkowski.

With the Salve Regina win, the Seahawks improve to 4-4-0, while the Lancers drop to 4-2-1 on the 2015 season.

This Saturday the Lancers will return to MASCAC play, as they take on Framingham State at John F. Coughlin Field on the campus of Worcester State at 5:30 p.m.
