FITCHBURG, Mass. --- Senior Alicia Macomber (Stoughton, Mass.) potted the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to help propel Worcester State to a 1-0 triumph over Fitchburg State in MASCAC women's soccer action this morning at Elliot Field.

With the victory, the Lancers upped their record to 5-3-2 on the season and 2-0-1 in the MASCAC while the Falcons slipped to 2-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

To start off the game, freshman Jenna Martin (Salem, N.H.) put the visitors ahead when she collected a loose ball in front of the goal and fired a shot, but freshman Morgan Steele (Somerset, Mass.) denied the opportunity with a tremendous kick save.

Fitchburg State's best chance to get on the board in the opening frame occurred 11 minutes later as sophomore Whitney Mansfield (Lunenburg, Mass.) put one on target that senior Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, Mass.) turned aside to preserve the 0-0 game going into the break.

After the intermission, the Falcons threatened in the 73rd minute as junior Victoria Floeck (E. Taunton, Mass.) lofted one to the opposing net, however, Worcester State senior Mackenzie Foye (Ludlow, Mass.) cleared the ball off the goal line to keep the game right where it was.

Macomber finally broke the stalemate with 12:05 remaining in regulation as she settled a ball at midfield, raced down the right side and finished to the left side of the net for her third marker of the year for what proved to be the final score.

WSU outshot their counterparts, 24-6 (12-4 on goal), and led in corner kicks, 4-3. Steele collected 11 saves for the Falcons as Witkowski stopped all three shots she saw en-route to her fifth shutout of the campaign.

In upcoming action, both squads will take on Little East opponents at 7 p.m. in the next week. The Laners host Keene State on Wednesday while Fitchburg State takes on UMass Dartmouth this Monday.
