Worcester State and Salve Regina Settle for 3-3 Tie

NEWPORT, R.I. – After facing deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 late in the second half, the Salve Regina University women's soccer team scored two unanswered goals to force overtime in an eventual 3-3 tie with visiting Worcester State University Thursday afternoon.

1st HALF

The first half remained scoreless until Worcester State's Jill Anderson (Spencer, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal in the 34th minute to put the Blue and Gold ahead 1-0.

 

2nd HALF

Worcester State added to the lead early in the second half on an unassisted goal from senior forward, Ashleigh Howland (Wilmington, Mass.). However, Salve Regina broke through with a tally eight minutes later when Francesca Galeazzi (Lynn, Mass.) found the foot of Abby McMackin (Walpole, Mass.) who altered the score to 2-1.

Worcester State's sophomore Morgan Goozey (Douglas, Mass.) registered her first collegiate goal in the 70th minute, as she took a loose ball of a throw-in and tapped it past Salve's goalkeeper, Carly Palal (Milford, Conn.) to reestablish the 2-point lead. However, Salve Regina went on a scoring spree and knotted the score at 3-3 as Carah Cote (Adams, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal in the 75th minute and McMackin registered her second goal of the day in the 78th minute.

 

OVERTIME

The Lancers controlled the first overtime and the Seahawks controlled the second, but neither could find the back of the net again and the game ended in a draw.

 

STORY BY NUMBERS

  • Worcester State freshman Jill Zinkus (Grafton, Mass.) stopped 14 shots, while allowing three second half goals. However she had some timely stops when the Seahawks were threatening to take the lead late in the second half and overtime.
  • Salve Regina junior, Pala, stopped eight of eleven shots while allowing three goals. After the Lancers scored to make it 3-1 Pala stopped every shot she faced after that for the next 32 minutes over action into double overtime.
  • The Seahawks held the advantage in shots in every stanza with the exception of the second half. Overall, they marked a 25-19 edge in shots.
  • Salve Regina held a slight advantage in corner kicks (7-6).
  • In the previous three meetings the final score of each game had been 1-0, a combined three goals in three games. Today six total goals were scored, three apiece.
  • This was the fourth meeting between the two teams all-time. The Lancers still hold a 2-1-1 record in the series.

The Lancers open at home on Saturday, Sep. 9 when they host Clark University in a 12 noon game at Coughlin Field.
