Women's Soccer Blanked by WPI

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Worcester State women's soccer team fell 5-0 to crosstown rival WPI on Tuesday night. 

WPI recorded its second shut-out of the season, as sophomore Lili Hellerman (Ashland, MA) and senior Lauren Paul (Schaghticoke, NY) split the time in goal each making a save on the night. 

Grad student Sofia Orrico (Bethel, CT) finished the night with a goal and an assist, one of five different Engineers goal scorers, while six different players finished with at least one point in a game that offensively was heavily in favor of the Engineers as they outshot Worcester State 30-3 on the night, including a 10-2 advantage on goal.

Orrico netted the game-winner just 17 minutes into the game, her first goal of the season, as she streaked down the left wing to put the Engineers up 1-0. 

Sophomore Molly Vincent (Douglas, MA) made it a 2-0 game with her third goal of the season, taking a cross from junior Caitlin Bonavita (Wilbraham, MA) and putting it into the back of the net in the 29th minute of play. Sophomore Hannah Wolfgang (Holliston, MA) made it a 3-0 game before the half with her second goal of the year sending a ball through the middle of the field that was eventually deflected into the net in the 42nd minute of play. 

Junior Lilly Proulx (New Boston, NH) kept the hot offense going opening up the second half of play netting her second goal of the season with some help from Orrico who dished a pass from the left side of the field to set up the goal.

The Engineers weren't finished and tacked on one more goal in the 87th minute of action when Senior Meredith Eddy (Newfields, NH) netted her first goal of the year.

Ali Maldonado (Rutland, MA), Hailey Santos (Swansea, MA) netted the two shots on goal of the evening for Worcester State while Tori Socci (Blackstone, MA) faced 10 shots on goal making five saves.


WPI will head out to Trinity on Friday, Sept. 10 to take on the Bantams at 7pm  Worcester State will play host to Gordon one week from today on Tuesday, Sept 14 at 7pm.
