Women's Soccer Blazes Past MCLA

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Worcester State University women's soccer team shut out MCLA 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Shewcraft Field in Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference action.

With the win, the Lancers move to 3-3 on the season and open conference play 1-0. The Trailblazers fall to 0-5 with the loss and 0-1 in the conference.

The Lancers put four shots into the Trailblazers' territory and in the ninth minute Ali Maldonado (Rutland, Mass.) put one into the back of the net off an assist from Kristen Beidleman (Holliston, Mass.) to put the Lancers up 1-0. Just about eight minutes later Maldonado sent a ball to Ella Tatarczuk (Bedford, Mass.) for her first goal of the season and sent the Lancers into the locker room up 2-0.

Despite 16 shots in the second half the Lancers were unable to score again. Megan Gurlitz (Auburn, Mass.) had five shots on the day, but goalkeeper Mady Breese (Bennington, VT) was solid between the posts. Maldonado ended the day with seven shots. The Lancers combined for 36 shots total and held MCLA to just three shots.

Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) had one save in the win. Breese and Jillian Currier (Troy, N.Y.) split time for the Trailblazers making five and 10 saves respectively.

Worcester State will be back in action on Saturday to open up conference play at MCLA. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
