Women's Soccer Slides Past Fitchburg State

FITCHBURG, Mass.-The Worcester State University women's soccer team recorded a 3-1 win over Fitchburg State Saturday afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Elliot Field. 

The Lancers improve to 5-3-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The Falcons drop to 0-6-1 and 0-1-1 in conference action.

Worcester State grabbed the lead midway through the first half when senior Alana Garofalo (Berlin, Conn.) threaded a pass to junior Haley Mignon (Tewksbury, Mass.), who fired a shot inside the near post for her second goal on the season for the 1-0 edge.

Fitchburg State knotted the score (1-1) in the 36th minute as graduate student Shannon McCarthy (Chicopee, Mass.) settled a pass from sophomore Ashley Porter (Upton, Mass.) and deposited the ball into the upper right corner for her second tally of the 2021 campaign.

The Lancers regained the lead with just 30 seconds remaining in the half with Mignon sliding a pass over to junior Haley Samara (Worcester, Mass.) as Samara then lofted a shot into the upper middle for her first marker of the year to make the score 2-1 going into the break.

Worcester State upped its margin at the 54:09 mark when senior Cammi Arnold (Marlborough, Mass.) collected a loose ball and blasted a shot inside the near post for her first goal of the season. 

Lancers finished with an 18-6 advantage in shots, while also holding a slim 5-4 edge in corner kicks

Junior Allison Gough (Wolcott, Conn.) made three saved for the Falcons. Senior Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) stopped one shot for the Lancers.

Falcons return to action on Monday as they travel to Clark to take on the Cougars for a non-conference matchup, starting at 7:00 PM. Lancers will host the Engineers of MIT on Wednesday in non-conference action at 7:00 PM.
