Worcester State Women's Soccer Grabs MASCAC Win over Falcons

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Women's Soccer headed to Fitchburg State Saturday afternoon in a bid to grab their first win of the season.

Final: Worcester: 4     Fitchburg: 2

The action started from the first whistle for the Lancers as just 35 seconds into the game saw Worcester awarded with a penalty corner and a quick shot by sophomore Ava Speidel (Luneburg, MA) that was handled by the Falcons goalie, Skyla Vaudo. A midfield battle ensued until 7' minute, which saw the beginnings of a flurry of activity for Worcester State. Within the next seven minutes the Lancers would not only rocket off four attempts at the cage, but claim three corners before first year Samatha Sharp (Peabody, MA) recorded the opening goal for Worcester State in the 14' minute. This was the first goal for the Lancers since a long ball found the back of the net versus WPI, and Worcester was starting to feel their offensive mojo returning. A goal from Fitchburg, about five minutes later, would see the game tied at one goal all, but the Lancers were not looking to come home with another tie. Just over five minutes into the tied game, junior Raelyn Callhan (Pepperell, MA) found the back of the net for Worcester to grab the 2-1 edge. The lancers refused to back down for the remainder of the half, but Vaudo was focused in the box and prevented the Lancers from tapping another one past the line as the halftime board would remain 2-1.

The second half continued much the same for the Lancers as they were quick to grab a corner and begin their offensive onslaught. Just over five minutes into the second half sophomore Erin Condon (East Bridgewater, MA) knocked in the third goal, off a pass from first year Jess Forbes (Clinton, MA) for the Lancers to grab back the lead after a quick goal started the half for the Falcons. Worcester was on a dominant pace all game and looked to have this one cleanly in the bag. In the 80' minute Worcester pushed their lead to two with a swap of the first of the second half, as Forbes sent the ball into the back of the net off a pass from Condon. The Lancers would continue to attack the box and look to extend their lead and continue their scoring rhythm.

Worcester moves to (1-5-2, 1-2) grabbing their first conference win of the season. They are back in action on October 4th when they journey down to Western Connecticut for a 6pm start.
