Five Women's Tennis Student-Athletes Garner ITA Scholar Athlete Recognition

Stillman, NJ --- Juniors Laura Sarkis (W. Springfield, MA) and Brook Michanczyk (Middletown, CT), freshmen classmates Cassandra Goncalves (Ludlow, MA) and Megan Shepard (Middletown, CT) along with sophomore Taylor Tomasetti (Waterford, CT) have all been recently honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for their efforts in the classroom and on the tennis court.

To be named to an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must have participated on the varsity team, maintained a 3.5 grade point average for the current academic year and been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.

Approximately 558 female Division III individuals were honored with the distinction as Worcester State had the most in the Little East Conference and tied for the ninth-most honorees in New England. MIT had the most with 10, followed by Smith (8) and Western New England (7).

Among LEC institutions, UMass Boston also had four who were tabbed to the team. The Lancers were the only public school of higher education ranked in the top 10 regionally.

For Michanczyk and Sarkis this marks the second consecutive year that they have garnered ITA Scholar-Athlete honors for their excellence in the classroom. The pair last year helped the women's tennis team post the highest 2011-12 GPA in the entire athletics department with an outstanding 3.37 average.

In the last academic year (2012-13), the women's team was one of eight squads to have over a 3.0 GPA.

The women's tennis team who is coming off their first-ever LEC Tournament appearance last season will start their 2013 fall campaign on August 31 with a home matchup against Gordon.
