Women's Tennis Bests Clark, 7-2, In Crosstown Rivalry Matchup

 

Worcester, MA ---The Worcester State women's tennis team swept doubles and took four of six singles matches to post a 7-2 triumph over Clark University this afternoon at the Corash Tennis Courts.

The win for the Lancers is their fifth in their last six matches, pushing their overall record to 5-3, while the Cougars fall to 2-7. The victory over Clark is the first since October 19, 2006 in their final match of that season.

WSU came out and got the top flight doubles wins beginning with an 8-3 win for sophomore Megan Shepard (Middletown, CT) and freshman Shelby Jankins (W. Brookfield, MA) over second-year Phoebe Hughes (Parkland, FL) and classmate Kera Snyder (Portland, ME).
 
That was followed by junior Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, MA) and teamate Taylor Tomasetti (Waterford, CT) knocking off sophomore Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, MA) and freshman Ellie Bakalchuk (Newton, MA) 8-2 at second doubles.
 
The Lancers completed the sweep when senior Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT) teamed up with fourth-year Laura Sarkis (W. Springfield, MA) to move past rookie Jen Comi (Norwich, VT) and senior Molly Igo (Clinton, MA) at third doubles with a score of 8-3.
 
The Cougars collected both of its wins in singles action where senior Sarah Sachs (Branford, CT) topped Candeleri, 6-2, 6-0 at first singles and Kravetz registered a straight set win over Shepard, 6-4, 6-0 at third singles.
 
Things continued to roll for the Blue and Gold as Jankins collected a 6-4, 7-5 win over Hughes, at second singles and junior Miranda Biron (Webster, MA) dispatched Bakalchuk at fifth singles (7-6 (7-3), 6-2).

Michanczyk and Sarkis, also posted straight set wins and fourth singles and sixth singles, respectively, for the Lancers.

Both squads return to conference action on Saturday at 1 PM. Clark hosts Emerson in a NEWMAC matchup while Worcester State heads to unbeaten Rhode Island College for an LEC match-up.
