Women’s Tennis Edges Salem State, 5-4

HOLDEN, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's tennis team edged the visiting Salem State Vikings 5-4 in a Tuesday afternoon Little East Conference (LEC) matchup at the Wachusett Regional High School tennis courts.

THE MATCH

Worcester State started the day with a win when Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) and Isabel Badeau (Cumberland, R.I.) defeated Salem's Ann Spence (Attleboro, Mass.) and Jackie Garvey (Melrose, Mass.) 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. Salem State knotted the score at 1-1 with an 8-5 No. 3 doubles win when Cassie Morrison (Clinton, Mass.) and Kristin Klimowicz (Ispwich, Mass.) were the victors over Valerie Tocco (Pelham, N.H.) and Marissa Lombardi (Ludlow, Mass.). The Lancers capped off the doubles sector with a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles. Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.) and Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.) defeated Maddie Allaire (Columbus, Ohio) and Meredith MacDonald (Lynn, Mass.) 9-7.

 

Salem State once again tied the score with a No. 6 singles as Garney downed Tocco 6-1, 6-1. After Worcester State's Silk blanked her opponent at No. 2 singles, the day saw another tie score (3-3) when Salem's Alwaire defeated Khafaga 6-1, 6-2. Worcester State scored the next point on a 6-3, 6-0 win from Green, and then a win at No. 4 doubles by Monika Mularksi (Auburn, Mass.) clinched the match for the Blue and Gold.

 

UP NEXT

Worcester State returns to play on Saturday (Oct. 7) when they host Bridgewater State in LEC action at 12 p.m. in Worcester. Salem State will return to the courts next week when they host Emerson College and University of Southern Maine Oct. 11 and Oct. 14.
