Women’s Tennis Topped by Bridgewater State on Senior Day, 7-2

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's tennis team was topped by the visiting Bridgewater State Bears by a score of 7-2 on the Lancers' senior day.

THE MATCH

Bridgewater State captured two of the three doubles matches and five of six singles flights in the win.

The Bears received doubles win from the senior tandems of Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) and Amanda Strickland (Plymouth, Mass.) at number one and Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) and Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) at the second flight. The Lancers' doubles pairing of senior Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) and freshman Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) posted a 9-7 decision at the third flight.

In singles play, Silva battled back from a set down to record a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 triumph at the top spot. The Bears also picked up straight set singles wins by Roman, Strickland, sophomore Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) and freshman Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) at the second (6-1, 6-0), fourth (6-1, 6-1), fifth (6-1, 6-4) and sixth (6-2, 6-2) flights, respectively. Alves notched the Lancers' lone singles point with a 6-0, 7-5 victory at number three.

Following the match Lancers gathered with friends and families to recognize Worcester State's two seniors: Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.) and Silk.  

 

COACHES CORNER

Head coach Courteney Blais commented on the seniors, "They have been the core of our lineup during their time at Worcester State and they will be missed. They are determined to finish strong this season and they are enjoying every minute of it."

"There was a lot of heart and fight out on the courts and it's too bad we couldn't make it happen today," expressed Blais.

 

UP NEXT

The women's tennis team wraps up the regular season next week as they travel to Clark and Rhode Island College on Tuesday (Oct. 10) and Saturday (Oct. 14), respectively.
