Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Track and Field teams were tabbed 3rd and 4th in this year's MASCAC Preseason Coaches' Poll as voted on by the conference coaches. This year's conference championship will be held on February 10 at Smith College after a hiatus post the 2021 cancelled season.
Selected to finish first for both the Men and Women was Bridgewater State with nine total points and three first place votes. Coming in behind on both teams was Westfield State who garnered six points in the Men's preseason selections and seven, and a first-place vote, in the Women's. Fitchburg State would finish in lone third on the men's side with the last remaining first place vote, and 5 total points and tying for third in the women's poll with four points.
The Lancer's Men's squad was picked fourth with four points in the poll. During the 2022 season, sophomore Taylor Gavaletz (Dudley, MA) competed in the 400 meters and triple jump primarily. His top time in the 400 came at the Suffolk Relays where he crossed the line in 55.87. For the triple, his best distance was at the Wheaton Pre Postseason meet where he made a top leap of 12.22m.
The Women were selected in the tie with four points in the third spot. Senior Eryca Lopes (Ayer, MA) was a dual combo with the 60 meters and long jump. She had a season-best time of 8.64 in the 60 during the Lyon-Mule Dual Invitational and at the same meet, she had another personal record in the long jump with a leap of 4.99m.
The indoor season begins on Saturday, December 2 when Bridgewater State competes at the Suffolk Relays while Fitchburg State and Worcester State head to the Smith College Mary Grinaker Invitational and Westfield State to Springfield College for their invitational.
