Arnold Honored As MASCAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week

Buzzards Bay, MA --- Sophomore Mercedes Arnold (Mira Loma, CA) has been tabbed as this week’s MASCAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week helping lead the Lancers to a fifth place finish at the Jim Sheehan Invitational this past weekend. For Arnold this is her second straight weekly outdoor award.

Arnold took home top honors in the long jump with a leap of 5.44 meters to set the school record before she placed second in the triple jump (11.26 meters). Arnold also distinguished herself in a deep field of competitors as she notched 13th in the 100 meters (13.46) and 15th in the 200 (27.81).

Freshman Leah Walczak (Whitinsville, MA) also earned a nod to the MASCAC Track Honor Roll for eclipsing the school mark in the 400 (59.28) and she helped the 4x400 relay team clock a new time in that event (4:13.12). Walczak’s 400 mark eclipsed a 14-year record previously held by Lancer Hall of Famer Elke Aun (59.79) and the relay time shaved more than 22 seconds off of the previous record (4:35.65).

The Lancers will hit the track again on Saturday at UMass Dartmouth, the site of the MASCAC and New England Alliance Championships.
