Walczak Named MASCAC Athlete of the Week

Buzzards Bay, MA --- Sophomore Leah Walczak has been selected the MASCAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week after she helped lead the Lancers this past weekend at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic. This is the first time in the outdoor season that she has captured weekly honors after she earned the accolade twice in the indoors.

Walczak, a product of Whitinsville, MA, captured top honors in the 400 meter dash (1:00.44) and the high jump (1.45 meters) as she helped lead the Lancers to a team title at UMass Dartmouth.

Walczak has had a strong season after she helped break a pair of school records last week at the Jim Sheehan Invitational. Walczak eclipsed the school mark in the 400 (59.29) last week before she helped anchor a leg of the 4x400 meter relay’s record shattering time (4:13.32). Her 400 time qualified her for the ECAC’s.

Junior Andrea Ouellette (Salisbury, MA) was also tabbed to the MASCAC Weekly honor roll for placing first in the triple jump (10.43m), fourth in both the long jump (4.32m) and 400 meter hurdles (1:04.94) before she took sixth in the 100 meter hurdles (17.26). Ouellette stamped her ticket for the Division III New England’s the 100 hurdles and triple jump.

The women’s outdoor track and field team is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Connecticut College before they compete in the MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships at UMass Dartmouth on Saturday.
