Women's Track Wins Four Events at Worcester City Meet

 

Worcester State Ranked Seventh In USTFCCCA Week 1 Regional Composite Index

Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Hannah Werneth (N. Yarmouth, ME) highlighted four first-place finishes for the Worcester State women's outdoor track and field team on Saturday at the non-scoring Worcester City Meet hosted by the Lancers.

Werneth tallied first in the shot put (11.34m/37-02.50) and discus (32.60m/106-11) with a pair of Division III New England qualifying distances.

Junior Brittany Grueter (Foxboro, MA) also placed first with a Division III New England standard in the 10,000 meters (41:56.64) while classmate Nicki Lemelin (Beverly, MA) clocked first in the 100 (13.21) and third in the 200 (27.46).

On Friday at Holy Cross, freshman Katie Cataldo (Attleboro, MA) posted an Open New England distance of 39.75 meters (130-05), just 13 feet shy of the school record. Cataldo put herself in contention for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships as she is currently ranked 11th on the latest performance list.

Other standout performances for Worcester State included sophomore Nicole Hanson (N. Dighton, MA) who stamped a ticket of her own to the DIII New England's with a toss of fifth in the javelin (33.72m/110-07).

Classmate Marlene Christenson (Danvers, MA) placed third in the shot put (8.99m/39-06), fourth in the discus (27.59m/90-06) and fifth in the hammer (38.38m/130-08) while freshman Shannon Trybus (Bondsville, MA) tallied third in the discus (28.91m/94-10) and sixth in the hammer (38.38m/130-08).

The distance corps was also paced by senior Meg Plant (Franklin, MA) who registered second in the 10,000 (42:47.42) as junior Erin Donohue (Saugus, MA) and sophomore Jenna Pickard (Peabody, MA) both claimed 3rd (19:37.80) and 4th (20:21.16), respectively, in the 5,000.

Second-year Kelsey Cartwright (Bridgewater, MA) was also seventh in the 1,500 (5:24.26) and 8th in the 800 (2:41.38) and freshman Chelsey Peso (Uxbridge, MA) was seconds behind with eighth in the 1,500 (5:24.76) and ninth in the 800 (2:42.05).

Next week the Lancers will compete at the Jim Sheehan Invitational hosted by Fitchburg State.
