Herbert Kick Starts Worcester State Track and Field Team

Worcester, MA- The Women's Outdoor Track and Field opened their season in a strong fashion today at the Bridgewater State Bears Invitational. Senior Avonia Herbert (Sharon, MA), and the Women's 4X100m Relay team led by senior Maureen Grady (Douglas, MA), senior Heather Turner (Ashland, MA), senior Elena Pellegrini (Ashland, MA) and senior Bridget Maunsell (West Boylston, MA), led the action tor the Lancers in their first meet of the 2023 outdoor season. 

The Lancers 4X100m relay team opened up today's racing with a 3rd place in a time of 51.86 to get the track events off and running. Grady returned to the track in the 100m race where she clinched a 9th place finish in a time of 13.33 seconds. Grady also found success in the jumping pit with 10th place finish at a distance of 4.53m, just ahead of junior Eryca Lopes, who jumped to a measurement of 4.05m for 16th place and Hebert's 4.43m 13th place finish. Hebert grabbed a top finish of her own in the sand pits with a fourth place triple jump finish with a distance of 10.13m.  Fellow relay teammates quickly returned to the track in the 400m after their relay success seeing Maunsell nabbed a seventh place finish in 63.93 seconds, Turner grabbing 13th with a lap in 65.97 and Pellegrini finishing in 17th in 67.73 seconds. First year Erin Condon (East Bridgewater, MA) crossed just ahead of Pellegrini with a 16th place finish just milliseconds ahead at a time of 67.23. Condon also grabbed a 17th place finish in the 200m with a time of 28.78 seconds. 

 

The distance side of the track had strong races on the day with senior Caitlin Conneely (Tewksbury, MA) coming in strong in the 5000m with a 13th place, 21:20.29 time. Fellow senior Angela Nigro (Webster, MA) ran to a 17th place finish with her time of 23:37.34. In the 1500m, first year Nina Fonteix (Elancourt, FR) crossed in 15th place in a time of 5:33.70 minutes while senior Erica Hanlon (Shrewsbury, MA) crossed 23rd in a time of 5:55.05, just seconds ahead of first year Leah Berg (Worcester, MA) at 5:58.38 in 26th. 

 

Arianna Constant competed in the hammer throw at todays meet, recording a distance of 25.44m for 18th place. Senior Riley Sanderson (Leominster, MA) added another first place finish for the Lancers in Javelin with a throw of 41.84m while teammate Constant came in 9th place with a throw of 27.76m. Senior Taylor Solimine wrapped up the throwing with a 25th place at a throw of 17.96m.

 

The Lancers Track team is back in action next Saturday when they head to UMass-Dartmouth for the Corsair Classic.
