Pellegrini Nabs Four Top Finishes While Herbert Places First as Women's Track and Field Finishes 3rd at Jim Sheehan Memorial Classic

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Women's Track and Field team had another successful meet today at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Classic Track Meet. Their relay success continued to lead the way, led by senior Maureen Grady (Douglas, MA), senior Bridget Maunsell (West Boylston, MA), senior Heather Turner (Ashland, MA) and senior Elena Pellegrini (Ashland, MA) on the track while senior Avonia Herbert (Sharon, MA) and junior Eryca Lopes (Ayer, MA) took charge in the field events as Worcester State placed third with 79 points at today's meet.

Sticking with previous meets success, the Women's Track and Field team sent their powerhouse relay team onto the track where they nabbed first place in a time of 50.30 seconds in the 4x100m relay. The senior led quartet of Grady, Turner, Pellegrini, and Maunsell have been mastering their success in speed games all season. Pellegrini even secured a 5th place finish for her solo endeavors in the 100m with a time of 13.14 seconds along with Grady who came in nearly two tenths of a second behind at 13.32 for seventh. Junior Eryca Lopes (Ayer, MA) was nearly a second behind Pellegrini, with a time of 14.12 for an 18th place crossing while first year Erin Condon (East Bridgewater, MA) was two hundredths of a second off in her 20th place crossing at 14.14 seconds. Pellegrini did not stop with just 100m success as she crossed in blazing fashion with a time of 27.19 for third in the 200m.

Relay teammates Maunsell and Turner continued their track success with repeat top performances in the 400m. Maunsell crossed in a blistering 62.91 for second place while Turner was just under two seconds behind at 64.16 for a fifth place finish. Sophomore Carly Gilson (Grafton, MA) and first year Jillian McMenemy (Westborough, MA) each tested their speed today, crossing in 14th (71.89) and 17th (84.85) to round out the event. Condon looked to use her 100m speed to find the perfect launch in the 400m hurdles this afternoon, and she did not disappoint, crossing in 75.18 seconds for a 5th place finish in the event.

Senior Caitlin Conneely (Tewksbury, MA) cruised into 5th place to start the day in the 10000m race with a time of 46:12.04. Fellow senior Erica Hanlon (Shrewsbury, MA) and first year Leah Berg (Worcester, MA) hit the track for the 800m, coming in at 17th (2:53.10) and 19th (2:54.82) in the event.

The 4x100 relay team regrouped to compete in the 4x400m with one slight alteration as Condon stepped in for Grady as they looked to set the marks of the relay. The team crossed in a time of 4:19.33 to grab second for the Lancers and a fourth top 5 finish for Pellegrini on the day.

The Lancers met with equal success in the field events today as senior Avonia Hebert (Sharon, MA) leaped to first in the triple jump with an impressive distance of 10.56m as fellow jumper Lopes, marking her distance at 9.87m, and a fourth-place finish. Grady looked to continue her speed success in the long jump, leaping to a distance of 4.71m and a fifth place landing to add to her additional collections on the day. Two places behind saw Hebert notch a 4.6m while Lopes hit 4.41m for ninth. Senior Riley Sanderson (Leominster, MA) racked up another top three finish this season, tossing a 39.11m javelin throw for 2nd place in the event. Sophomore Arianna Constant (Leominster, MA) rounded out the top 10 with a 29.40m toss while senior Taylor Solimine (Hudson, MA) came in 25th with a 20.61m toss. Closing out the day was Constant back for another throw, this time in the Hammer, were she would place 14th after a 28.53m measurement.

The Women's Track and Field team returns to action on April 22nd when they travel to Tufts to compete in the Tufts Sunshine Classic.
