Women's Volleyball Loses To WPI And Assumption At Worcester City Tournament

Worcester, MA --- Worcester State University dropped a pair of matches this afternoon as they finished in fourth place this afternoon at the Worcester City Tournament. The Lancers lost to WPI in the opener 3-0 and Assumption in their second game, 3-1.

Freshman Megan Brown (Dartmouth, MA) tallied eight kills, 44 digs and three aces to help propel the Blue and Gold. Classmate Shawna Strazzere (Billerica, MA) also added totals of 24 assists and 12 digs in the two setbacks. Both were honored on the All-Tournament team for their contributions this afternoon.

The Lancers will head to Anna Maria on Thursday for a 7 PM matchup before they travel to Southern Maine for a trimatch to play UMass Dartmouth at 2 o'clock and the hosts at 4.

 

WPI 3, Worcester State 0 --- Box Score

Worcester State University lost their first matchup of the day to WPI in three straight sets, 25-11, 25-18 and 25-16.

Brown and junior Joanne Grenier (Orange, MA) combined for 31 digs in the loss while Strazzere totalled 15 assists and 4 digs. Senior Brittney Ledoux (Nashua, NH) recorded a team-best five kills with two aces.

WSU couldn't get their offense going as they only mustered 17 team kills for the game. The Boynton Hillers were relentless around the net as they hit .308 percent (11-for-26) in the first match and .333 percent in the third set (18-for-45). The Crimson and Gray also had a solo block and three block assists while the Lancers did not a record a rejection in the contest.

 

Assumption 3, Worcester State 1 --- Box Score

The Lancers were defeated 3-1 by Assumption as the hosts took the first set 25-14 before the Blue and Gold evened the series with a 25-20 score. But the Greyhounds rallied and took the last two games 25-15 and 25-19.

Brown led the effort as she notched 31 digs and three aces while Strazzere and sophomore Jodi Hallett (Gill, MA) combined for 15 assists. Second-year Becky Lebel (Millbury, MA) registered 19 digs and two solo blocks. Brown along with junior  Katey Figella (Feeding Hills, MA) both finished with four kills as junior Kristen Koles (Billerica, MA) and third-year Juliana Tyo (Pepperell, MA) each had three kills apiece.
