Women's Volleyball battles past AMCATS for 3-0 win

Paxton, MA --- Freshman Megan Brown (Dartmouth, MA) recorded nine kills and seven digs to help propel the Worcester State University women's volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Anna Maria College at The Fuller Activities Center on Thursday night.

The victory improves the Lancers to 4-6 on the year, while the loss evens the AMCATS' season mark to 4-4.

In addition to Brown, the Lancer's also received strong performance from junior Kristen Koles (Billerica, MA), freshman Shawna Strazzere (Billerica, MA), and junior Joanne Grenier (Orange, MA). Koles matched Brown with a team-high nine kills, while Strazzere led the Lancer's with 10 assists, and Grenier led all players with a match-high 15 digs.

The AMCATS were paced by sophomore Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, MA), who led all players with 10 kills and three blocks in the loss. Junior Alicia Bonneau (Worcester, MA) also played well, dishing-out a match-high 11 assists, while junior Nichole Robbie (Bellingham, MA) and freshman Amanda Glennon (Wollaston, MA) each recorded a team-best nine digs on the night.

The Lancers got off to a quick start in game one, racing out the gate to a 13-5 lead. After Brown served Worcester State to four consecutive points, including three on aces, Anna Maria's head coach was forced to call a timeout.

After the break, the AMCATS were able to regroup and stormed back to eventually tie the score 20-20.

With the two teams knotted up at 24-24, the Lancers took control by scoring the next two points, including a kill by sophomore Becky Lebel (Millbury, MA) to clinch the game, 26-24.

The Lancers again built an early lead to start game two, but this time there would be no AMC comeback, as Worcester State cruised to a 25-15 victory.

Down two games to none heading into the third frame, the AMCATS continued to battle. Trailing 10-5 early, AMC fought back to tie the score at 16. Anna Maria continued to hang tough, but with the Lancers leading 24-22, senior Brittney Ledoux (Nashua, NH) delivered a strong kill to solidify the game for WSU 25-22, giving them the match by a score of 3-0.
 
Both teams will return the court on Saturday hitting the road to compete in tri-matches. Worcester State will travel to Southern Maine along with UMass Dartmouth, while the AMCATS will visit Colby-Sawyer along with Castleton State.
