Women's Volleyball Falls To Newbury, 3-1

 

Brookline, MA --- Worcester State was defeated by Newbury College, 3-1, this evening at Hellenic College in non-conference women's volleyball action.

The Lancers (1-5) were defeated twice in the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-21 before they took the third, 26-24. But the Nighthawks (5-3) rallied from a deficit midway through the fourth to win the match with a 25-19 win in the final set.

Junior Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, NY) led the effort for the Blue and Gold with 38 assists and 12 digs while senior Megan Brown (Dartmouth, MA) was also in double figures with 10 kills and 12 digs.

Fourth-year Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) contributed a team-best 15 digs as junior Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) and sophomore Meghan Deighan (Lynnfield, MA) both had squad-highs of 11 kills each. Jasper also chipped in with four aces and a solo block.

Other leaders statistically for the Worcester State included freshman Valerie Hoyle (Bridgewater, MA) who tallied five kills and a pair of solo rejections and sophomore Kaylee Leduc (Swansea, MA) registered six digs defensively.

With her total this evening, O'Brien passed former standout Lauren Saylor (2006-09) to become the all-time leader in career digs with 918 to her credit. Volleyball statistics were first recorded starting in the 2003 season.

The Lancers look to get back on the winning track this weekend with three contests at the Wesleyan/Trinity Invitational. WSU takes on Colby-Sawyer on Friday (5 PM) before they play Clark at 1 o'clock and the hosting Cardinals at 3.
