Women's Volleyball Falls 3-2 To Lasell In Road Matchup

 

Newton, MA --- Lasell sophomore Alyssa Nahigian (Coventry, RI ) tallied a double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs as she helped lead the Lasers to a 3-2 win over Worcester State in non-conference women's volleyball action this evening at the Lasell Athletic Center.

With the win, Lasell improves to 10-9 on the campaign while the Lancers slip to 5-11 with the setback. The Lasers avenge last year's loss to the Blue and Gold as WSU prevailed in a five-set triumph.

The visitors took the first set, 25-12, before Lasell won the next two 26-24 and 25-20. Worcester State earned forced the fifth series with the 29-27 fourth before the Lasers finished off the marathon with the 15-12 win.

The Lancers were paced by junior Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) who tied a school-record with 27 kills who also finished with eight digs and a stellar .349 hitting percentage on 63 attempts.

Senior Megan Brown (Dartmouth, MA) was solid with 10 kills, 20 digs and two service aces while sophomore Kaylee Leduc (Swansea, MA) recorded 14 digs.

Junior Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, NY) dished out a contest-best 45 assists for the fourth-most helpers in a single game for the Blue and Gold.

Lasell was also propelled by junior Stella Edwards (Quincy, MA) had a team-best 12 kills and junior Kathy Cameron (Boston, MA) chipped in with 10. The hosts also finished with 101 digs – 29 of which were put up by sophomore Jordan Seid (Rowland Heights, CA).

Sophomore Sharisse Scott-Rowlins (Brockton, MA) added 21 digs and eight digs as classmate Heather Longley (N. Granby, CT) notched seven kills, one solo block and a trio of block assists.

In the second, WSU was up 16-13 before attacking errors helped give the Lasers the 21-19 advantage in a 9-3 run. However, the Blue and Gold ended the skid when Brown notched a kill and a service ace to tie up things up (22-22). Junior Katy Cameron (Boston, MA/Boston Latin) though came up for Lasell with a trio of kills in a 4-2 surge to finish with the 26-24 win.

Worcester State also held the 19-13 margin in the fourth, but several attacks that were off the mark helped put Lasell back into the game in a 9-2 uprising to set the stage for a 22-22 contest. After the raucous crowd was treated to three ties and five lead changes, the Lancers received consecutive kills from Jasper to even up the series.

The Lancers were ahead early 8-5 in the fifth, but Longley helped the hosts even things up a 10-10 with two kills and a block assist in a 5-2 outburst. WSU then committed a ball handling error and an attacking error to help put the Lasers up 12-10.

Junior Ali Remigio (Tewksbury, MA) did help the visitors make an attempt at a rally for the 13-11 score, but Lasell received kills by Longley and Edwards to clinch the match.

Worcester State was plagued by 11 service errors while Lasell had 10 block assists for a total of seven in the contest.

Jasper tied the mark that former standout Lauren Saylor set on September 8, 2007 in the City Tournament against Clark. Single-game, season and career marks have been kept since the 2003 season.

Worcester State will head to the Bear Classic and take on host Coast Guard in the opening round on Friday at 7 PM. The Lasers play again in GNAC tri-match to take on Simmons in Boston at 4 PM and Albertus Magnus at 6 o'clock on Saturday.
