Lancers Snag First Win Of The Season

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Lancers traveled to neighboring Paxton to square off against the 0-2 Anna Maria AMCATS in a weeknight showdown. The Lancers dropped their first two games of the season and aimed to bounce back in the single match contest.

Sophomore Kate Stedronsky (Sea Girt, N.J.) comes into tonight's game tied for first in blocks per set with the second-best hitting percentage (.350) in the MASCAC. Graduate senior Camryn Burgio (Quincy, Mass.) enters the night third in digs per set (4.17).

 

The Lancers dropped the first set 20-25. They had eight kills, nine errors, and 33 total attempts. The AMCATS countered with six kills and four errors on 23 total attempts. 

 

In the second set, Worcester found a groove winning 25-12. The Lancers tallied up 12 kills with four errors on 45 total attempts. The AMCATS took a step back in this set with five kills and nine errors.

 

Gaining momentum from the previous set, the Lancers squeaked out a 25-20 win. The team finished with 11 kills and only three errors on 41 attempts. This set was Worcester's highest percentage of the game (.195). 

 

In set four, Worcester won the set 25-19 to win four straight after dropping the first. The team tallied 11 kills with four errors on 46 total attempts to win the game four sets to one.

 

Sophomore Cassidy D'Esposito (Medford, N.Y.) led the team in points (12.5) with two blocked shots. Senior Maeve Cadogan (Wilmington, Mass.) and first-year Beatrice Gamboa-Estrella (Simi Valley, CA) trailed D'Esposito with eight points. Maeve and D'Esposito both were tied for most blocks on the night with two.

 

Junior setter Angela Colonis (Waterford, Conn.) led in assists with thirteen while adding 13 aces to her stellar night behind the line. Burgio contributed 25 digs for the team. 

 

With the win, the Lancers grab their first win of the season and improve to 1-2 as Anna Maria falls to 0-3. The next game for the volleyball squad will be away at Framingham State tomorrow with a 6 PM start time in the first of two matches against their MASCAC foe this season.
