Lancers Split At Trinity Tri

Worcester, MA- The Lancers traveled to Hartford, Connecticut for a double match up that saw them take on Mitchell College and Trinity College Saturday afternoon. Worcester State won the first match against Mitchell with a comeback after five sets 3-2 (25-13, 17-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-12), but after such a battle were unable to come up with the second win so quickly, losing 3-0 to Trinity.

The first match saw Worcester coming out strong, racking up 9 points before the Mariners could win one of their own. Strong performances by juniors Megan Bardis (Rutland, MA), Angela Colonis (Waterford, CT), and first year Beatrice Gamboa-Estrella (Simi Valley, CA) helped the team win the first set 25-13. The second set was more of an even game, with the lead going back and forth between the two opponents. Mitchell took off mid-match with 3 aces and 10 kills, 6 of which came from Bliss Brown (Rainbow City AL). Mitchell would take the set 25-17. The Mariners ran with the momentum to win the third set 25-19, but the Lancers were not backing down. They trailed at the beginning of the fourth set, but Colonis and Gamboa-Estrella honed in to win the Lancers their fourth set 25-21 and earn a fifth set. The fifth set was tighter, but the Lancers prevailed, narrowly winning 15-12 to tie off the game.

Worcester State played Trinity College next, losing 0-3. In the beginning, the Lancers never let Trinity have much of a lead, keeping within a few points throughout the set. Three consecutive kills by Gamboa-Estrella fought to keep the Lancers alive, but several service errors ultimately led to the loss of the first set 20-25. The second set warranted a similar result as the Bantams' Bella Caffuzzi (Brooklyn, NY) made her mark with 5 kills, leading to Trinity's 25-17 win. As the fatigue of the day set in, Trinity went into the third set with more energy than the Lancers. Sophomores Cassie Millea (Orange, CT) and Kate Stedronsky (Sea Girt, NJ) both had strong performances for the Lancers but the Bantams were able to bring home the win with 25-17 in the third, sweeping Worcester State.

Worcester State now sits at 3-3 on the season, while Mitchell moved to 2-3 and Trinity moved to 3-1. The Lancers are home for their next game on September 12th versus Regis College where they hope to gain another out-of-conference win.
