Worcester State Volleyball Claims Third Spot in MASCAC Coaches Preseason Poll

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Volleyball team has claimed the third spot in the MASCAC Preseason Coaches poll as voted on by the conference coaches. Worcester State was 4-3 last season, falling just shy of another NCAA post season birth in a loss to Westfield State. The Lancers will look to return the MASCAC trophy to Worcester State behind returners Camryn Burgio, Erin Gaffney and a season cast of both returners and top incoming talent.

The 2023 MASCAC Champion Westfield State grabbed the top spot in the poll with four first place votes and 45 total points. Falling just a point shy of the Owls was Framingham State, who the Lancers took down in five sets in the MASCAC semifinal last season. The Rams secured three first place votes and a total of 44 points to come in second in the polls.

Sitting in third place is Worcester State with 37 points. The Lancers return 2022 MASCAC Defensive Player of the Year Burgio who led the MASCAC in total digs with 476 while finishing second in the league in digs per set at 4.29. She also tallied 167 kills, 44 assists, 41 aces and 23 blocks this season.

Grabbing the final first place vote and the fourth spot is Bridgewater State with 30 points with MCLA tight behind with 29 points. Coming in at number six is Fitchburg State with 19 points and Salem State with 13. Rounding out the MASCAC Poll is Mass. Maritime with seven points.

The Worcester State Volleyball team beings their season at Brandeis University in a double match set with Salve Regina and Brandeis on September 2nd. The first match is scheduled for 10am versus the host Brandeis and wraps up with a 12pm start against Salve Regina. The Lancers first home set is scheduled for September 12 versus Regis College with first serve set for 7pm.
