Worcester State Volleyball Sweeps MASCAC Weekly Honors

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Volleyball team has swept this weeks MASCAC Weekly awards after an impressive 2-1 week that saw the Lancers remain on top of the MASCAC with a pivotal showdown versus Westfield State, who is tied for first place, tomorrow at 7pm.

For the first time this season junior Angela Colonis (Waterford, CT) has earned the MASCAC Offensive Player of the Week recognition. Colonis finished with 42 assists, 25 kills, 28 digs and four service aces in a 2-1 week for the Lancers. She had 14 assists, six kills, seven digs and an ace in the five-set win over Bridgewater State and added a double-double of 12 digs and 12 assists with six kills in the 3-0 win over Dean. She ended the week with 16 assists, 13 kills and nine digs in the 3-1 setback to Eastern Conn. State. This season, Colonis has recorded 88 kills, 286 assists and 209 digs for 1.5 points per set.

Graduate student Camryn Burgio (Quincy, MA) claims for the second time this season the MASCAC Defensive Player of the Week honor as she collected 71 digs with 10 assists, eight service aces and seven kills in a 2-1 week for the Lancers. Finished with 30 digs, four aces and three assists in the five-set win over Bridgewater State.  She added 20 digs, three assists and two aces in the 3-0 win over Dean and 21 digs, two aces and four assists in the 3-1 setback to Eastern Conn. State. So far on the season, Burgio has totaled 368 digs, 46 assists and 41 service aces.

Also repeating in the MASCAC weekly awards is first year Beatrice Gamboa-Estrella (Simi Valley, CA) who claims for the second time this season, Rookie of the Week honors. Gamboa-Estrella tallied 24 digs, 18 kills, five service aces and two block assists in a 2-1 week for the Lancers. She had 14 digs, six kills, four aces and block assists in the five-set win over Bridgewater State and added six kills, three digs and a block assist in the 3-0 win over Dean. Finished with six kills, seven digs and an ace in the 3-1 setback to Eastern Conn. State. In her rookie season, Gamboa-Estrella racked up 143 kills, 126 digs and 15 services for a team leading 2.4 points per set.
