WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's cross country team has been recognized by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for their academic accomplishments during the fall 2017 semester.

This fall, the Worcester State women's cross country team marked a 3.44 overall GPA, earning this accolade for the sixth-consecutive year.

"The 2017 women's cross country team entered the competitive season charged with continuing the team's accepted goal of again earning 'All-Academic' team status," commented head coach Gary Jusseaume.  "It was exiting to be the first women's cross team in Worcester State history to ever win the MASCAC conference championship.  Coupled with our academic success, both goals were decisively achieved."

In order to be considered for this distinction, the team must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional meet and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.10 on a 4.0 scale.

Overall, there were 388 teams honored by the USTFCCCA today. Of those teams, 221 of them were women's programs and 167 of them were men's.

Not only was Worcester State honored as a team, but junior women's cross country runner, Mia Rogers (North Dighton, Mass.) was honored individually as a USTFCCCA Division III All-Academic recipient.

"Mia's academic and athletic accomplishments this past 2017 season, typifies the culture that is the Worcester State University cross country student-athlete," mentioned Jusseaume.  "Mia's approach to her studies and running share an equal plane.  She strives to put forth her best effort in both endeavors and is unwilling to settle for less."

To earn USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) and finish in the top-25 percent at their respective regional. At the NCAA Division III New England Championships, Rogers completed the race in a time of 22:14.1 which was good for 31st place in a field of 393 runners.

In total, there were 668 student-athletes named USTFCCCA All-Academic with women accounting for 55 percent of that total number (368).
