Title: | Class of 1993 |
John F. Ethier, tennis has played a major role in your life as
well as the entire Ethier family, many of whom represented Lancer
tennis teams over the years.
You showed your relentless desire to perform to the best of your
ability while spearheading the Worcester State College tennis team
for four years. You played as the number 2 player as a freshman and
went on to become the number 1 player in your sophomore, junior and
senior years. You compiled an excellent 41-11 singles record and
combined for an outstanding 45-7 record in doubles, many of those
matches played with your brother, Tim, making the Ethiers tough to
beat.
You and Tim combined for a 14-2 doubles record in two years. You
also combined with Hall of Famer Joe Gill to become one of the top
MASCAC doubles teams. Your leadership qualities were evident since
you were named the captain of the team in your junior and
&senior years.
You had an outstanding senior year with 10 wins and 3 losses and
you reached the finals of the Massachusetts State College
Conference tennis tournament
During the 1970 season, the Lancers were represented by you, Tim
and brother Mike on the same team. Another brother, Paul, who is
deceased, also played tennis for the Lancers and was a captain of
two teams and was also his class president. Your sister, Patty was
also an outstanding player for the Lancers Women's teams and was a
captain of her team.
All of the Ethier family tennis accomplishments must be attributed
to your father Paul, who has been playing tennis for 55 years and
taught all of you the game of tennis. At 78-years of age he is
still playing tennis.
You are a member of the Shrewsbury Tennis Club and also play in a
doubles league in Paxton. You are currently employed as a buyer for
the Neles-Jamesbury Corp.
John F. Ethier, it is with great pride that we induct you into the
Worcester State College Athletic Hall of Fame.
