Lancers Lacrosse Takes Season Opener, 20-1

Worcester, MA --- Behind the strength of an eight point afternoon by senior Shannon Feeley (W. Springfield, MA), the Worcester State College women's lacrosse team opened their 2009 campaign with a resounding, 20-1, defeat of New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance foe Thomas College Saturday afternoon at Coughlin Field.  This marks the second straight season that the Lancers have posted an opening game victory. 

Junior Brittany Jamieson (Foxboro, MA) opened the scoring 2:21 into the contest off a feed from Amanda Cosenza (Shrewsbury, MA) and Worcester State never looked back as they outscored the visitors, 14-0, in the half.  Feeley posted four of her five goals and all three of her assists in the first frame.  Feeley entered the game as the second all time leading scorer in Worcester State women's lacrosse history.  She is second all time in goals (120) and assists (68) and now finds herself just 10 assists away from taking over first place.

Jamieson and sophomore Karla Rotondi (Tewksbury, MA) each posted hat tricks for Worcester State followed by Michelle Astuccio (Foxboro, MA) and Megan Rosborough (Uxbridge, MA)who each had two goal days.  Five other Lancers found the back of the net with Amanda Cosenza adding three assists to her goal on the afternoon.

Thomas College broke the shutout with just 2:40 remaining when center Megan Denby (Capaigue, NY) tallied an unassisted goal.

Worcester State outshot the Terriers 39-7 on the afternoon.

Worcester State freshman net-minder Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) made four saves in her collegiate debut between the pipes.  Thomas keeper Ashley French (Rindge, NH) stopped 10 Lancer offerings in the loss.

Worcester State returns to action on Thursday when they host Rhode Island College on Coughlin Field.  Thomas will visit St. Joseph's College on Wednesday.
